Professional development and training

We are the only specialist provider of training for male family violence prevention in Australia. We have provided training for individuals and organisations for over ten years.

We provide resources and professional development for service providers who want to improve their responses to men who use violence. We have a range of training packages ranging from half- and one-day seminars to a comprehensive course in men’s behaviour change work — the Graduate Certificate in Social Science (Male Family Violence). This latter qualification (or its equivalent) is the minimum required for facilitators of men’s behaviour change groups.

Our training and assessment team comprises social workers, psychologists and other professionals, all of whom hold the Graduate Certificate in Social Science (Male Family Violence) and Certificate IV in Training and Assessment or its equivalent.

Our half- and one-day training seminars are ideal for service providers seeking skills to:

  • identify situations where male clients are using violence
  • relate with male clients who are using violence in ways that encourage them to obtain specialist help
  • assist partners and children experiencing violence to obtain the support that they need.

Our training seminars can be specifically adapted to meet the particular contexts and needs of an organisation, network of organisations or service environment.

We can also provide briefer presentations at staff meetings, conferences and other gatherings.

Graduate Certificate in Social Science (Male Family Violence) in Group Facilitation

No To Violence and Swinburne deliver the Graduate Certificate in Social Science (Male Family Violence) in Group Facilitation, having developed this course in 2000.

This Higher Education accredited course is specifically designed for professionals working within the family violence sector and is the only recognised qualification for facilitators of Men's Behaviour Change groups in Australia, perhaps in the world.

The course trains professionals to:

  • work safely and ethically with men around issues of gendered violence and control
  • respond sensitively and safely to the needs of women and children affected by male family violence.

It involves a combination of class work, observation and placement on a part time basis over a period of one year. Men’s behavioural change program facilitators who have extensive experience may undertake a shorter ‘Advanced Practitioner Program’.

The courses provide the opportunity for trainees to:

  • gain essential theoretical and practice-based expertise
  • further their conceptual and therapeutic skills in facilitating men’s behaviour change processes and responding to the needs of women and children.

A similar qualification is also offered for men seeking to volunteer as a telephone counsellor with the Men's Referral Service - a Graduate Certificate in Social Science (Male Family Violence - Telephone Counselling). For more information on this qualification, visit the Men's Referral Service website.
