Working with Men who use Family Violence in Aboriginal Communities

The Strong Aboriginal Men’s Program (SAM) and Family Violence organisations invite you to a forum at Lake Burrendong NSW, Thursday 22 – Friday 23 August 2019.

This forum will provide an opportunity for Aboriginal men and service providers from across the State to come together and discuss the issues presenting in their communities. Forum delegates will join SAM forum members for a welcome dinner and networking opportunity on Wednesday 21 August. The forum will run from Thursday to Friday lunchtime. Together we will explore culturally safe and inclusive responses to family violence and provide recommendations on how programs can be designed with and by community.

The forum will showcase a number of family violence projects being undertaken by Aboriginal communities across the western region of NSW and other locations across Australia. It will also explore current and emerging practice in working with men who use family violence with a focus on skills development and knowledge sharing.

The forum will be of benefit to:

  • Aboriginal communities/workers, CEO/Managers of Aboriginal Controlled Organisations
Managers/Practitioners from specialist and mainstream family violence organisations
  • People wishing to develop their practice skills and knowledge in working with men who use violence in Aboriginal families
  • People interested in building knowledge and skills required to work with Aboriginal communities in a culturally appropriate way within family violence services across regional NSW
  • The forum is brought to you by No to Violence, NSW Health’s Education Centre Against Violence and Mission Australia Central and Far West.

There are limited free places available for Aboriginal community leaders and Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation staff.

For all other delegates the cost is $350 (inclusive of accommodation and catering: Welcome dinner Wednesday 21 August and all catering up to and including lunch Friday 23 August plus accommodation for 2 nights 21-23 Aug). Day prices are also available – see booking details on Eventbrite.
